Rose Festival in Kazanlak, Bulgaria (5-7 June 2020) celebrates the deep connection between the Bulgarians and this outstanding flower. During the festival you can participate in various events like Rose-picking rituals, organised in various locations around the Valley, Rose festive parades (Carnivals) and festive processions of the Rose pickers. During the Rose Coronation the new Rose Queen will be crowned, accompanied by traditional dancing and singing from various folklore groups.

The detailed program of the 2020 Rose Festival is not yet published by the Municipality of Kazanlak. You could expect events like the following based on the previous years: contest-spectacle “the Queen of Roses”, Cheerleaders show, “Rose Princess” – children spectacle, Official opening of the Festival and Crowning of the Queen of Roses, International Folklore Festival, „The Bread of the Bulgarian“ an exhibition at the Rosarium park, Festival parade in the city centre of Kazanlak, Festive procession of the Rose pickers, Rose picking rituals by location.
Rose-picking rituals are organised in various locations around the Valley. Enjoy Bulgarian folklore dancing, traditional customs, crafts and taking pictures in a rose field. The most visited ritual event is the one near Kazanlak and happens on the first Sunday of June every year in the fields north of the city, near Kran village. Rose picking rituals happen at 10:00 AM in each respective village and are organised by local rose producers, local folklore groups and the local municipality.
We offer one, two, three or more days to the region of Karlovo/Kazanlak during the Festival in May/June. Additionally to the festival events your itinerary could include:
– Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak discovered in 1944 (Hellenistic period, around the end of the 4th century BC). It is located near Seutopolis, the capital city of the Thracian king Seutes III, and is part of a large Thracian necropolis. The paintings inside are Bulgaria’s best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period.
– Shipka Monument and the Park Museum Shipka, located on top of Shipka Peak (1,326 m) in the Balkan Mountains, 28 km from the town of Kazanlak. The park comprises of 26 monuments, the reconstructed battle positions, artillery batteries and dugouts of the defenders of Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War from 1877 – 78. The Liberty Memorial is among the largest of the monuments in the park. Its outline resembles a medieval Bulgarian fortress and can be seen from dozens of kilometres. It was built with donations from the people from all over Bulgaria and was inaugurated on 26 August 1934.

The Festival has been organised annually since 1903 in Kazanlak. It celebrates our deep connection to the Rosa Damascena – the Bulgarian oil-bearing rose and all the gifts it has blessed the Rose Valley with for centuries.
Cultural, dance, music, artistic, social and sports events happen across Kazanlak and the surrounding villages in May-June.
