Zheravna is a little Bulgarian museum-village, situated in the Eastern part of the Bulgarian Balkan mountains. The most interesting thing in the village are the 200 and more wooden houses from the Bulgarian Revival period.
The International Festival of Folklore Costume in Zheravna was created in 2008 on the idea of Hristo Dimitrov – producer, choreographer and director of NFA “Bulgare”.
This festival brings you closer to the life of the Bulgarians from once upon a time. Participation in the festival is a voluntary act and those who want to join it have to observe its rules. The main requirement is to be dressed in folk costume (they can be rented on site). They can be authentic or stylised. Also allowed are clothing from the early 20th century, old military uniforms, as well as traditional ones of other countries. It is forbidden the use of a number of objects from modern life and plastic. Please note that the use of mobile phones is only allowed in a designated chat area. During the main festival days cameras, cellphones, etc. are strictly forbidden. Only accredited media and festival photographers are entitled to this. There is also a parking lot for the guests of the festival.
The detailed program of the Festival is not yet published but there will be a number of concerts, folklore competitions, dances around big fires in the evening and a lot of traditional food.
Zheravna is an architectural reserve with well-preserved and restored Revival houses, decorated with exquisite carvings, narrow cobblestone streets and numerous fountains. 172 houses in the village have been declared monuments of culture. Some of the houses are older than 300 years. The houses of Rusi Chorbadzhi, the home of the writer Yordan Yovkov, the home of Sava Filaretov and the church “St. Nicolas” are of great interest for tourists.
We offer at least two, three or more days to the region of Zheravna and Kotel during the Festival at the end of August. It could be combined with visiting the open-air museum villages of Zheravna and Kotel, the town of Sliven and hiking in the eastern part of the Balkan Mountain – one of the best parts of Bulgaria. Please ask!
Depending on your arrival/departure schedule we can also offer additional tours in the region or Bulgaria as a whole.
