St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Comrat

The cathedral “St. John the Baptist” is one of the main tourist attractions of the City Comrat, and celebrates its dedication on January th 20th. Historian cannot say exactly when the cathedral was founded, the opinions being divided between the dates of 1820 and 1840. It is considered that the founder is the priest Feodosie Marunevici.

Soviet mosaics are vibrant, large-scale artworks made from glass and stone (smalt) adorning public buildings across the former USSR, functioning as durable propaganda for socialist ideals like labor, progress, and national unity, yet often incorporating local culture, folklore, and even futuristic space themes, creating a unique blend of state ideology and regional identity on city facades

Comrat: Gateway to Gagauzia

Nestled in southern Moldova along the Ialpug River, Comrat serves as the capital of Gagauzia, an autonomous region with a distinct cultural identity. This quiet city offers a glimpse into a lesser-known corner of Eastern Europe, where the Gagauz people—a Turkic ethnic group—have maintained their unique heritage.

At the heart of Comrat stands the St. John the Baptist Cathedral, a historic landmark dating back to either 1820 or 1840 (historians remain divided on the exact year). Founded by priest Feodosie Marunevici, the cathedral celebrates its dedication each January 20th and remains one of the city's main attractions.

For travelers seeking authentic experiences beyond typical European destinations, Comrat presents an opportunity to explore a region where culture, history, and autonomy intersect in fascinating ways. It's a place where the rhythms of daily life unfold at a different pace, and where the story of the Gagauz people continues to be written.
