Hiking in Wadi Rum Desert with visits to Amman, Petra and some other places in Jordan (guided tour)

I have hiked in the desert Wadi Rum in Jordan several times, including as a leader of small groups. This strange reddish desert is probably one of the best hiking and climbing areas on earth. The focus of this trip to Jordan is the 3-day moderate hike through the Wadi Rum desert, which includes wild camping. The route is not extreme and does not require professional skills or exceptional endurance. We will hike about 6 – 7 hours per day, avoiding the hot daytime sections and following the shade of the huge rocks. Two of the four nights will be wild camping in tents in the desert, and two of the nights will be in an arranged campsite, deep in the desert with bathrooms, standard beds, a Bedouin-style restaurant and other amenities for tourists.

In the desert, we will see the valley of Um Ishrin, the mountain “Jabal Enfesheie”; the area called Um Sabata, the extremely impressive Barra Canyon and many others.

The group will meet at our hotel in Amman (hotel name to be announced). The next day we will have a sightseeing tour in Amman and then continue south on the so-called “Kings Highway”. On the way, we will enjoy the Wadi Al Mujib valley and stop at several places for tea, rest and photos. We will continue to Madaba, an ancient city in Jordan. The next stop is the holy Mount Nebo, a high mountain ridge, about 710 metres above sea level. The last place we will visit today before reaching the Wadi Rum desert, is Kerak, one of the largest Crusader castles in the Levant.

Three days of hiking and wild camping in the desert will follow. On the way back to Amman airport, we will make a 6 or 7-hour stopover in Petra.

Day 1 Arrival in Amman, the capital of Jordan

Today we fly to Amman. In the evening we will all meet at the hotel, the name of which we will let you know. We will arrange your travel, including flight tickets and all other details, depending on your departure point.

Day 2 Sightseeing Amman – Kings Highway – Karak Castle – Wadi Rum Desert

After breakfast, we will take a panoramic tour of Amman. We will visit the Roman Theatre and the Jabal Al Kwala Citadel. We will walk through the old city and the markets.

Then we will continue on the so-called “Kings Highway”, which is considered one of the most attractive and picturesque roads in the country, crossing it from north to south. We will enjoy the Wadi Al Mujib valley and stop at several places for tea, rest and photos. We continue to Madaba, an ancient city in Jordan, southwest of the capital Amman. It is famous for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George.

The next stop is Mount Nebo, an elevated ridge of the Abarim in Jordan, about 710 metres above sea level. It is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. The last place we will visit today before reaching the desert Wadi Rum will be Kerak, one of the largest Crusader castles in the Levant.

In the evening, we will reach the Wadi Rum Desert. We will have a short transfer with off-road jeeps from the information centre to the campsite, about 14 km inside the desert, where we will spend the night.

Day 3,4 and 5 Hiking in the desert Wadi Rum

On these days we will go for a hike in the desert. At this time of the year, it is not very hot. Also, we will be hiking mainly in the shade of the giant rocks, often stopping for photos, breaks and tea.

We will spend two nights in tents at different places in the desert (wild camping). You also can sleep under the stars using your sleeping bags only. This might actually be the highlight of this tour. These bivouacs are just for us, meaning there are no other tourists around. Luggage, tents and food are transported by an off-road jeep, which is also used in an emergency. We are looked after by Bedouins – a guide, a driver who is also a cook and everything else.

We will see the Um Ushrin valley and several dunes, the mountain Jabal Enfesheie, Um Sabata, the extremely impressive Barra Canyon and two smaller canyons. We will also see the famous rock paintings, the so-called Arch, we will stop at Lawrence’s house where we will have tea.

On the last day of hiking, we will return to the main camp with permanent tents, comfortable beds and good bathrooms and toilets.

This hike is NOT extreme and requires no special equipment or pre-training. There is no climbing in the mountains; the terrain is mostly flat.

Day 6 Petra – Amman Airport

Early morning transfer from Wadi Rum to Petra by our private minibus (about one and a half hours).

We will stay in the legendary “pink city” from about 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, enough time to see the main sights of this place. Due to its fantastic nature and exceptional historical value, Petra was included in the World Heritage List UNESCO in 1985.

The entrance to the ancient Nabataean city is called Siya – a long, winding gorge with red sandstone walls. Small engravings can be seen here and there, but the most impressive are the rocks’ colourful and unusual patterns. The most important object is the treasury. After another bend opens the “street of facades” – a large ravine, on both sides of which are the facades of various tombs. At the end is the Roman amphitheatre with 7,000 seats, which is occasionally used for performances.

At about 1.00 pm we will make our way to the airport in Amman, where we will arrive at 3.30 pm.
