Tsagaan Suvarga in Gobi desert, Mongolia

We went through near 3 hours climbing around the Tsagaan Suvarga, a limestone rock formation in the Gobi desert, southern Mongolia, more precisely in Ulziit, Dundgovi region. I would spend here at least 2 or 3 days, outdoors. The dusks and dawns must be excellent at this spot. It is intriguing to watch the slope confronting east, which has all the earmarks of being the remains of the old town. Local people consider the White Stupa a sacred place.

The site is similar to Bayanzag, maybe a bit more colorful and vivid. Most visitors merely walk along the clifftop, then find a trail down to the mounds that roll along the valley floor. The photo opportunities are enormous, as seen from the photo gallery.

The formation of the cliffs began millions of years ago. Dundgovi Province was the bottom of an ancient sea. Perfect grounds for this lies with a closer inspection of the cliffs. Tsagaan Suvarga contains many sedimentary limestone layers and is rich in marine fossils.

The cliffs stand at approximately thirty meters in height and have been shaped strangely due to the enormous power of the wind and the water erosion.
