The story

During our trek in Tassili n'Ajjer (south Algeria) in April 2023, one of the most special moments was the tea ceremony performed by our guide Ali every night around the campfire.

Once upon a time, a weary traveler found herself lost in the vast Algerian Sahara. As she stumbled through the endless dunes, hope of finding civilization began to fade.

Then, a glimmer of light appeared in the distance. With renewed spirit, she followed it until she discovered a small Tuareg camp.

The Tuareg people welcomed her warmly, inviting her to join them for tea. As they prepared it in their traditional way, a deep sense of peace washed over her.

With each cup of tea, her spirits lifted higher. The first cup's bitterness echoed her journey's challenges while reminding her of the strength she'd gained. The second cup's sweetness recalled the joy and love in her life. The third cup's smoothness spoke of life's fleeting nature, yet celebrated its profound beauty.

As she finished the third cup, the traveler felt deep gratitude—both for the Tuareg people's warm welcome and for the tea that had brought her serenity amid the vast, unforgiving Sahara. When she bid farewell and resumed her journey, she carried with her the memory of the Tuareg tea ritual and its profound lessons about life, love, and mortality.

To prepare tea in the Tuareg style: First, heat water and add green tea to a teapot. Pour hot water over the tea and let it steep until the leaves unfurl. In a second teapot, add sugar and pour in the first tea mixture. Aerate the tea using a large glass until it develops a rich foam. With a graceful pour from height, serve the tea in glasses filled three-quarters full. Add fresh mint leaves for vitality and freshness, then sip slowly to show respect to the one who prepared it.
