Tsagaan Suvarga in Gobi desert, Mongolia

The place

Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) is a magnificent limestone formation in the southern Gobi desert of Mongolia. Though we only stayed for three hours, I strongly recommend spending at least two days here—the dusks and dawns are surely spectacular at this spot. Local people revere the White Stupa as a sacred place.

Like Bayanzag but more vibrant, this site offers a scenic path along the cliff edge that leads into the valley below. As the photo gallery shows, there are abundant opportunities for photography throughout.

The cliffs began forming millions of years ago when the Dundgovi Province lay at the bottom of an ancient sea. Today, Tsagaan Suvarga's sedimentary limestone layers hold abundant marine fossils. The cliffs rise thirty meters high, sculpted into distinctive shapes by centuries of wind and water erosion.

There is no public transportation to this location. Your best option is to hire a guide with a car or join an organized tour. For adventurous travelers, I recommend camping in the area overnight.
