The Sadarghat Ship Terminal in Dhaka, Bangladesh is strategically positioned in the southern part of the city, situated along the banks of the historic Buriganga River. This remarkable terminal stands as one of the world's largest and busiest river terminals, providing services to more than 200 vessels of various sizes on a daily basis. According to estimates from various sources, approximately 50,000 people rely on and utilize its services each and every day.
The name "Sadarghat" carries significant meaning, translating directly to "City Wharf" in English. This terminal was originally constructed and established as a primary landing place for boats, launches, and ships arriving to Dhaka from various other locations and destinations. However, in more recent times, large vessels are no longer able to utilize this terminal due to the progressive shoaling and silting of the river bed at the entry point, as well as an overall decline and decrease in the navigational capacity of the inland waterways system.
Hundreds of boats and launches arrive at and depart from Sadarghat daily, connecting the terminal primarily with the southern districts. Barges carrying cargo also use Sadarghat for loading and unloading. The terminal features a floating market for fruits and vegetables. Steamers transport passengers to regional cities such as Khulna. A road running parallel to the river connects many parts of Dhaka to Sadarghat.
