The place

Visiting the Flaming Cliffs—also known as Bayanzag—was one of the highlights of my 2015 Mongolia trip. I was fortunate to experience the site during stormy weather, which created a truly dramatic landscape. Though I captured hundreds of photos, carefully selecting the best ones proved challenging once I returned home. Here is my curated collection, which I hope captures the essence of this remarkable place.

The region is famous for the first-ever discovery of dinosaur eggs, but this is just one of its fascinating features. The distinctive geological formations offer valuable insights into the Gobi Desert's ancient environment. The site has yielded remarkable discoveries through numerous archaeological excavations, revealing not just dinosaur fossils but also remains of extinct mammals and plants.

Removing fossils from the Flaming Cliffs site is strictly illegal without proper permits. These regulations help preserve the site for future generations to study and appreciate. The Mongolian government protects the area through national monument status and maintains a museum showcasing the site's most significant discoveries. The Flaming Cliffs/Bayanzag region stands as a remarkable destination for enthusiasts of paleontology, geology, and natural history.
