The story

In November 2018, while our small group was traveling to Hasankeyf in southeastern Turkey, our car came to an unexpected halt. Before us stretched a massive column of sheep moving along the road, creating a natural roadblock. With nothing else to do, we stepped out of the car to capture photographs. The sight was truly breathtaking.

Each year, the stockbreeders undertake a challenging journey to high altitudes in search of fertile grasslands for their animals. This arduous trek, lasting up to 45 days, follows a route with predetermined stops. These resting places are vital for both the shepherds and their loyal horses and donkeys, offering precious water sources amid the barren landscape.

In southeastern Turkey, these shepherds practice a distinct form of pastoralism that combines both village-based and nomadic lifestyles.
