Brief description
The highlight of this journey is hiking and wild camping in Tassili n'Ajjer National Park's Sefar region, deep in Algeria's Sahara Desert. Here, we'll experience some of the world's most dramatic desert landscapes and explore nearly 15,000 prehistoric rock paintings and inscriptions in what is recognized as the world's largest open-air museum (UNESCO).
Our adventure begins in Djanet, a major southern Algerian city, where we'll start our trek through the Saharan plateau and Tassili n'Ajjer National Park (UNESCO), one of Earth's most scenic and historically significant places. We'll hike 5 to 6 hours daily for six days across rugged terrain, with elevations ranging from 1,100m to 1,800m on the Tassili and Sefar plateau. While no specialized training or equipment is needed, participants should be in good physical condition without serious health concerns. We'll stay in wild camping sites, where our local Tuareg guides prepare all meals and handle logistics—you'll only need to carry a light backpack.
A unique aspect of this journey is our interaction with the Tuareg guides, offering us insights into their rich culture, cuisine, customs, and way of life.
In Algiers, despite our brief stay, we'll explore the old town (Kasbah), visit the city of Cherchell, and discover the archaeological park of Tipasa (UNESCO) before flying back to Algiers and onward to Sofia.

Program
Day 1: Arrival in Algiers—Algeria's Capital
Today we fly from Sofia to Algiers. After checking into the hotel around noon, we'll explore the Kasbah (the historic old quarter of Algiers). Overnight at Hotel Afric (3 stars).
Day 2: Exploring Algiers, Cherchell, and the Archaeological Park of Tipasa (UNESCO)
Our private bus takes us to Cherchell, about 80 km from the capital. We'll explore this historic city and have the option to visit its remarkable archaeological museum, home to some of Africa's finest Roman and Greek antiquities. Our journey includes a visit to the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania. We then proceed to the Archaeological Park of Tipasa (UNESCO). In the late evening, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Djanet.
Days 3-8: Exploring Tassili n'Ajjer We arrive at Djanet airport early in the morning and transfer to our hotel for rest until 10 AM. Here, we meet our guides and the donkeys that will carry our luggage and equipment. Our journey takes us into Tassili n'Ajjer National Park's Sefar region, where we'll spend our days hiking and wild camping. Each day involves 5-6 hours of hiking, adjusted to the group's pace. Our local Tuareg guides handle all logistics, preparing three fresh meals daily at our campsites. Participants only need to carry a light backpack.
Tassili n'Ajjer is a vast plateau in southeastern Algeria, spanning 72,000 square kilometers. Its most remarkable feature is its collection of prehistoric art—thousands of ancient inscriptions and paintings dating back to 10,000 BCE, from the early Neolithic period to the end of the last ice age, when the Sahara was a habitable savanna. First documented in 1910 (though some sources cite 1933), the site now contains 15,000 identified rock paintings and inscriptions. These artworks showcase magical-religious practices, animal scenes, and glimpses of daily life and social activities from those ancient times. The rock art serves as a well-preserved record of human-environment relationships, offering valuable insights into climate change, wildlife migrations, and human evolution in the Sahara. The paintings feature water-dependent animals like hippopotamuses—species that vanished from the region millennia ago. This unique blend of geological, ecological, and cultural elements makes Tassili n'Ajjer one of Earth's most fascinating sites.
We'll trek through the "rock forests" of eroded sandstone—some of Earth's most lunar-like landscapes. Wind and water have sculpted these formations into their unique shapes over millennia. The area's sedimentary sandstone holds immense paleogeographic and paleoecological significance.
Our path winds through dramatic canyons, striking rock formations, rolling sand dunes, hidden caves, ancient riverbeds, and serene oases.
A highlight of our journey will be connecting with our Tuareg guides, who will share their rich culture, traditional cuisine, customs, and way of life.
Day 8: Return to Djanet We return to Djanet in the evening and spend the night at our hotel.
Day 9: Exploring Djanet Today we explore the charming city of Djanet, visiting its historic old town, vibrant market, and lush palm gardens. In the evening, we transfer to the airport for our early morning departure at 02:15. No hotel accommodation is provided tonight due to our pre-dawn flight.
Day 10: Return Journey We fly to Algiers early this morning, where we'll spend a few hours before catching our connecting flights to Frankfurt.
