The tour will include the following places and attractions

Sofia (city heritage & UNESCO frescoes)

Arrive in Bulgaria’s capital and begin at the city’s most iconic square, at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. After time for photos and a stroll through the historic center, continue to Boyana Church (UNESCO) to see its extraordinary 13th-century frescoes. Then visit the nearby National History Museum for context on Bulgaria’s layered past.

Rila Mountains (monastery & alpine hike)

Spend a full day in the mountains. Visit Rila Monastery, one of Bulgaria’s most important spiritual and cultural sites, set amid forested peaks. Take time to explore its arcaded courtyard and museum, and do not miss the warm fried pastry from the bakery behind the monastery.

In the afternoon, continue to the Seven Rila Lakes area and take the chairlift up for a spectacular hike with sweeping views.

Plovdiv (Old Town, Kapana & Roman theatre)

Plovdiv is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Wander the cobbled lanes of the Old Town, with its colorful Revival-period houses and viewpoints, then explore the Kapana creative district for galleries, cafés, and street art. End the day at the impressive Roman amphitheatre, which is still used for concerts today.

Veliko Tarnovo & Etar (medieval Bulgaria & living crafts)

Your next stop is Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval heart. Visit Tsarevets Fortress, dramatically set above the Yantra River, and wander the old streets and viewpoints. In the evening, if schedules allow, stay for the Sound & Light show.

On the way, or as part of the day, stop at the Etar Ethno Village near Gabrovo, an open-air museum showcasing traditional crafts and water-powered workshops.

Nessebar (Black Sea UNESCO town)

Head east to the coast and spend the day in Nessebar, a UNESCO-listed peninsula town of Byzantine churches, stone houses, and sea views. Enjoy free time for a relaxed walk along the shore, a seaside lunch, and, depending on the season, optional beach time.

Northwest Bulgaria (Belogradchik & Danube fortress)

A scenic drive through one of Bulgaria’s most striking regions. Explore the Belogradchik Rocks, where red stone formations rise around a fortress built into the cliffs.

Then continue to the Danube city of Vidin to visit Baba Vida, Bulgaria’s only fully intact medieval fortress, set right on the river.

One more day in Sofia (souvenirs & farewell)

Browse the antique and icon market around Alexander Nevsky Square, pick up last-minute souvenirs, and enjoy a relaxed farewell meal.
