The best time to explore Thimphu, the charming capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan, is early in the morning. The streets are almost empty, quiet, and filled with pleasant aromas. Witnessing the town's awakening is equally captivating. Pupils in traditional clothing gradually populate the streets on their way to school, people head to work, and life slowly returns to the city.
Thimphu, the largest urban center in Bhutan, is conveniently situated just a short hour's drive from Paro, the country's international gateway. Despite being regarded as the most contemporary city in the kingdom, Thimphu has managed to preserve its distinctive Bhutanese essence, seamlessly blending modernity with tradition. The city presents a fascinating juxtaposition where cutting-edge restaurants and bustling internet cafés harmoniously coexist alongside ancient fortresses, serene monasteries, and lush forests, creating a unique urban tapestry. This blend of old and new is emblematic of Bhutan's approach to development, which prioritizes the preservation of cultural heritage alongside modernization. A particularly intriguing aspect of Thimphu is its distinction as the only national capital in the world that operates without traffic lights, instead relying on traditional traffic police to manage the flow of vehicles.
