At Asmara’s “Tank Graveyard,” rusted tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces stand as stark reminders of Eritrea’s long struggle for independence. Once built for movement and destruction, these machines now lie abandoned, their metal slowly yielding to time.
Seeing weapons reduced to relics is unsettling. Stripped of their purpose, the vehicles draw attention away from military power and toward the lasting effects of conflict. The past is impossible to distance oneself from; it remains heavy and tangible in the steel.
This place deserves thoughtful attention, not just interest as an unusual photographic subject. Beyond the striking shapes and weathered surfaces, it offers a sobering reminder that war’s costs extend far beyond the battlefield.
