About the place

In May 2016, I led a small group to Turkmenistan. During our tour, we visited the fascinating village of Nokhur, nestled at the foot of the Kopet Dag Mountains — the natural border between Iran and southern Turkmenistan. The most remarkable site in the area lies just outside the village: the local cemetery. The graves are marked with mountain goat horns, reflecting burial rites deeply rooted in animism and Zoroastrianism.

According to local beliefs, mountain goats are sacred animals with the power to ward off evil spirits and guide souls safely to heaven. When a death occurs, a family member sacrifices a goat and places its horns on the tombstone. The graves typically feature horns from Urial mountain sheep and goats mounted on wooden posts. As an additional sign of respect for the deceased, some posts are adorned with intricate engravings and silk fabrics.
