In September 2024, I led a small group of travelers through China. Our journey back to Beijing from Xi'an on a bullet train became an unexpected window into the stark contrasts of modern China. As we sped along at up to 350 km per hour, I found myself capturing fleeting images of densely packed residential blocks - a testament to China's rapid urbanization.
The resulting gallery below showcases a series of shots taken from the train, each frame a glimpse into the lives of thousands crammed into tiny apartments. This juxtaposition - the ultra-modern high-speed rail zipping past endless rows of tightly packed housing - highlights the dichotomy of China's progress. On one hand, there's the technological marvel of bullet trains, and on the other, the challenging living conditions faced by many urban dwellers.
This unique perspective from the train window raises questions about the human cost of rapid development and the quality of life in these concrete jungles. It's a sobering reminder that behind China's impressive economic growth and technological advancements, there are complex social realities that often go unseen by casual observers.
