Karachi meets the Arabian Sea at Clifton Beach, better known locally as Sea View. In a city often associated with busy roads and constant movement, the beach offers a different perspective: open space, a distant horizon, and room to pause.

This photo essay brings together photographs I took in November 2019, during one of my first trips to Pakistan, when I led a small group to this amazing country.

A beach that belongs to the city

Clifton is not a secluded escape from urban life. Its appeal lies in its connection to Karachi. The city does not disappear at the shoreline; instead, the beach becomes one of its shared spaces, with the sea as a backdrop for time outdoors.

The beach comes alive at low tide in the evening. Hundreds of families spill onto the wet sand with children, food, and good cheer. Street vendors offer camel rides, sweets, and drinks. The scene feels magical—a paradise for photographers and anyone who loves the beach and the sea.

Sea View invites us to look beyond the usual postcard image of a beach. Its appeal is not just the water or the sweep of sand, but the relationship between a large coastal city and the shoreline at its edge—a place people can visit without travelling far.

Clifton Beach Part 1

Looking beyond the horizon

A beach photograph may draw the eye straight out to sea, but the shoreline deserves equal attention. The meeting of wet sand and water, the distance from foreground to horizon, and the scale of the coast offer different ways to frame the same place.

At Clifton, the wider setting matters as much as any single detail. Viewed as a sequence rather than in isolation, photographs can show how the beach sits alongside the city: an open, exposed landscape beside a densely inhabited one.

Clifton Beach Part 2

Karachi from its coastal edge

For travellers, Sea View offers a useful counterpoint to Karachi’s streets and built-up neighborhoods. It reminds us that the Arabian Sea is part of the city’s geography and identity, not merely something beyond it.

Clifton Beach need not resemble a remote tropical retreat to be worth visiting or photographing. Its character comes from being Karachi’s beach: familiar, accessible, and closely connected to the life around it.

These photographs offer a starting point for seeing that connection—not just the coast, but Karachi from the water’s edge.
