The place

In February 2023, I traveled with three friends to Mauritania. During our first day, we explored Nouakchott, the capital city, which to be honest, was not particularly remarkable. However, there was one must-see place - the fish market located next to the fish harbor in the western part of Nouakchott.

Upon entering the fish market, we were bombarded by a flurry of sounds and smells. The thick, salty scent of the sea mixed with the heady aroma of fresh fish and spices. People were bustling about, haggling over prices and inspecting the day's catch.

We navigated through the crowded aisles, taking in all the sights and sounds. We observed the Wolof and Fula men dragging in their heavy fishing nets, their muscles straining with effort. Small boys darted back and forth, carrying trays of fish as they weaved through the crowd. Each stall was more colorful than the last, with piles of gleaming fish, bright red lobsters, and plump shrimp on display.

As we made our way back through the stalls, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the experience. We came to realize that the fish market was more than just a place to buy seafood. It was a vibrant, living part of the community. And for us, it became a memory that we will treasure for a long time.
