The story

I've visited Morocco, specifically the Medina in Marrakech, several times. The following two galleries showcase photos from my November 2017 trip, when I led a small group of Bulgarian travelers to the country.

The Medina is an extraordinary, bustling place that can be challenging for first-time visitors. Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, the Marrakesh Medina features remarkable architecture that earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995. Like other ancient cities, it was built within a protective wall with strategic gates designed to defend against intruders.

Today, navigating the labyrinth of souks and narrow passageways is straightforward with smartphones and GPS maps. In the past, local boys would earn money by guiding lost tourists out of the Medina.

The old city, or Medina (meaning "city" in Arabic), consists of several interconnected neighborhoods. Each quarter features four essential elements at its center: large and small mosques, public steam baths (Hammams), and a public oven. These facilities border a central square where most community activities take place.

The Medina in Marrakech is a photographer's paradise, as you'll see in the galleries below. However, visitors should remain vigilant—I once had my phone snatched from my hand while leading a tour group. Despite this incident, the Medina remains a fascinating destination worth exploring, provided you stay alert and protect your belongings.
