The story

This photo journey through rural Sindh in southern Pakistan reveals the harsh realities faced by the rural population.

Sindh, located in the southeastern region of Pakistan, is a province with significant agricultural resources. It produces cotton, wheat, rice, sugarcane, and livestock, and contributes a large portion of the country's natural gas and oil production. However, despite its rich resources, the rural population in Sindh faces numerous challenges and struggles with poverty.

In November 2023, I embarked on a journey through southern Pakistan for the second time. This trip brought to light the harsh reality of poverty that plagues the region. The sight of numerous beggars was overwhelming, emphasizing the stark difference between the lives of those in poverty and our own.

Sindh's landscape is diverse, ranging from alluvial plains along the Indus River to the Thar Desert and the Kirthar Mountains. However, despite the natural beauty of the region, the rural population faces numerous challenges. The province is vulnerable to natural disasters due to its geographical location and climatic conditions. The devastating 2022 floods caused significant damage to houses, infrastructure, and agriculture, leaving millions of people in need of assistance.

The floods not only destroyed vast agricultural lands but also disrupted the irrigation and flood protection systems that support the livelihoods of half a million farmers. The livestock sector was also severely impacted, with the loss of thousands of animals. The resulting food shortages, price increases, and disruption of jobs further exacerbated the challenges faced by the rural population.

Poverty rates in rural Sindh are alarmingly high, with approximately 37 percent of the population living below the poverty line. The flood-affected districts bear the brunt of these challenges, experiencing higher poverty and stunting rates. Limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, clean water, sanitation, and electricity further compound the difficulties faced by the rural population.

Sindh, known as the "Gateway of Islam," holds a distinct cultural identity influenced by Sufist Islam. The province is home to the Sindhi people and a significant population of Muhajirs, who migrated to the region after the Partition of British India in 1947. Despite their cultural diversity, both Hindus and Muslims in Sindh share a strong connection to Sufism, which plays a vital role in shaping their identity.
