The story
The Krak des Chevaliers stands as one of the world's most impressive and best-preserved Crusader castles. Located near the city of Safita in Central Syria, this fortress was built by the Knights Hospitaller during the Crusades and remains in remarkable condition today.

I've had the privilege of visiting this site twice—in 2022 and 2023. Each visit offered new opportunities to explore the castle's hidden corners and delve into its fascinating history. During my first visit, I met a Hungarian archaeological team whose insights enriched my understanding of the fortress. Their dedication was evident as they continued their work despite the ongoing war.
The Krak des Chevaliers emerged remarkably unscathed from the Syrian Civil War, with only a single room damaged by shellfire. Our guide explained that the warring factions chose not to target the castle, focusing instead on the surrounding settlements—now largely in ruins. The castle now stands alone amid the devastation.
For visitors to the region, the journey up the mountain to this spectacular medieval fortress is truly worthwhile. As you walk through its vast chambers, you'll step back in time—discovering defensive battlements, soldiers' quarters, storage rooms, and ancient hearths. From the castle's summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views across the valley and villages below.
The Krak des Chevaliers has a rich history dating to the 11th century, when Kurdish troops under the Mirdasids first garrisoned it. In 1142, Raymond II, Count of Tripoli, granted the castle to the Knights Hospitaller, who held it until Muslim forces recaptured it in 1271.

During the 19th century, scholars renewed their interest in Crusader castles and began studying the Krak des Chevaliers. A settlement established within the castle walls in the late 19th or early 20th century unfortunately damaged parts of the structure. In 1933, after relocating the 500 inhabitants, the castle came under the control of the French Alawite State, which began a comprehensive clearing and restoration program. The Syrian government took control of the castle upon independence in 1946. Today, the village of al-Husn, with its population of nearly 9,000, encircles the castle.
This remarkable fortress stands as a testament to endurance. Despite centuries of change and recent conflict, the Krak des Chevaliers remains as awe-inspiring today as it was in medieval times.
